Wild West Domains Interview

Michael, as VP and General Manager of Wild West Domains, what is the one thing that keeps you up at night?

Very little keeps me up at night. Our Wild West Domains (WWD) reseller program is going strong, with continuous upgrade paths that make it easier for any large, medium, small or home-based business to add domain name re-sales to their product line. My main concern is keeping the reseller program working for our resellers and making the program better, and so far we are doing well in that mission.

On the other hand, what is the one thing that makes you jump out of bed in the morning?

The challenges and excitement of being involved in a growing business make me jump out of bed. WWD is growing rapidly, with more than 6,000 resellers registered with us today. Our expanding product offerings mean our resellers’ revenues and profits are growing as well.

Your company has an array of product offerings geared to the Hosting Industry. What innovative ideas and products can we expect to see in the future?

One of our biggest releases this year has been our Application Programming Interface (API) program, which allows our resellers the opportunity to provide all of Wild West Domains’ products and services under their private resale brand. Launched at ISP Con in Santa Clara, Calif., in October, we have had incredible feedback on the need and usage of an API with our services. WWD also offers an extensive product line, including Web-based email accounts with our powerful Spam Xploder spam filter and WebSite Tonight, our “click-and-build” Web site creation tool, as well as Traffic Blazer, our Web site traffic driver and c-Site, our online copyright registration service. We have everything a reseller needs to build a successful business.

As a follow-up, where do you see the biggest growth areas in the hosting industry over the next couple years?

I see small business e-commerce hosting solutions as the largest growth sector—everyone wants a store on their site now. WWD offers the easiest to use and most cost effective e-commerce package so I am confident that we will be successful in this growth area.

Can you briefly tell us how Wild West got started and the background of the company?

Wild West Domains started operating as an ICANN accredited registrar in July 2002. The sole purpose of WWD is to service domain/hosting resellers. The reseller program was formerly part of GoDaddy.com. This became a conflict of interest for the reseller program. So, WWD was spun off as a separate registrar for the reseller program, and it took off.

What unique skills do you bring as VP and General Manager that has contributed to your company's success?

With my background as a CFO, I bring a unique blend of bottom line awareness coupled with good communication skills. I converse with everyone inside and outside of the organization. The importance of communication and implementing suggestions has helped WWD become a success.

I see that customer support is a focus for you. How has that contributed to your success?

From day one, Bob Parsons has focused on the importance of highly competitive pricing coupled with TOP NOTCH service and support. This always has been the mission of The Go Daddy Group and its family of companies, which includes Wild West Domains. Since WWD does all of the technical support for its resellers, we focus on our customer service and support to allow the resellers to focus on what they do best—selling domain names and the tools associated with creating successful Web sites. With the high level of service we provide, customer support becomes one less thing for our resellers to worry about.

The WWD API is an exciting idea to allow people to co-brand your services on their site. How is the early adopter program going?

The early adopter program is going very well. When we presented the API at ISP CON in Santa Clara, Calif., we received excellent feedback from home-based and small businesses, as well as companies that were looking into adding domain name sales to their product offering. What makes our API unique is our commitment to support. When you sign up for our API, you are contacted by one of our technical API support representatives that will assist you throughout the entire process, if needed.

In this very tough business how does Wild West Domains separate itself from the competition?

The domain name industry is a growing business and there are a lot of competitors. WWD separates itself from the competition by our customer service—we provide personalized service 24/7 to our WWD resellers’ customers. There are very few reseller programs that allow customers to talk to a live human being at any time. Besides the 24/7 customer support available to our resellers’ customers, Wild West also offers reseller support. Reseller support can help troubleshoot the reseller’s site at their request.

Geographically, what areas do you see as the largest growth potential and how do you plan to capitalize on it?

Wild West Domains serves domain resellers worldwide, from the United States and Canada, to Great Britain and Australia. I see potential in every market internationally. I believe North America and Europe still provide the most untapped opportunities for WWD. North America is, of course, our largest market. As people learn how lucrative the domain name resale business is, I believe many will focus their attention on how to add it to their business profiles. Europe, like North America, is a strong market with England being our strongest country for domain name resellers. We continue to make in-roads throughout the rest of Europe.

What is the working atmosphere like at Wild West Domains and how has that and the employees impacted your growth?

At Wild West Domains, we move at the speed of light. WWD employees are very hard working, and we teach each other to go the extra mile for the customer. My personal growth has been extraordinary. I learn something new every day from either from my fellow employees or our existing and potential resellers. We work very hard to take care of each and every one of our resellers.
